A sudden and ignominious failure? The Iowa caucus clearly meets the definition of debacle.

Monday night, residents of Iowa gathered at 1,765 different locations to caucus for the Democratic nominee for President. Results were originally promised as early as 9PM. After some initial results were released, suddenly, all reporting stopped. As of this writing at 8AM on Tuesday, there are still no results reported for the caucus. 

Despite the sudden end of reporting, former South Bend, IN mayor Peter Buttigieg seemed to declare victory on Twitter. The Bernie Sanders campaign released internal results from their own caucus managers showing him with a sizable chunk of delegates.  

The latest information available seems to indicate that the problems stem from a new app that was supposed to report the caucus results quickly and electronically. The Iowa Democratic Party also had a few phones set up to report manually in case the app failed. At 3AM Nate Silver wrote a scathing and insightful article on the potential fallout of the failures of the Iowa Democratic Party in this year’s caucus.  

There are already many conspiracy theories in the usual places so readers are encouraged to wait for the final results.
