Believe it or not, there are other events happening in the world beyond what has swallowed up the attention of the news media.

This is a news article submitted by a reader like you. As a crowdsourced platform, we value breaking news whether it’s local, national, or international and encourage anyone and everyone to submit their news stories.

Read carefully, because I am about to tell you something you don’t know. Listening? Here goes: the world at large is in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic.

What, you already knew that?

Darn. Let me try again: Bernie Sanders dropped out of the presidential nomination race.

You knew that too?

Alright, I’ll give it one more shot: the US is most likely facing a recession.

I can sense a lot of frustration from my readers. I’m going to assume you also knew that third fact.

What’s the common denominator here?

Simple, it’s the fact that these stories, and their offshoots, are the only thing that the world media has been reporting on in the last few weeks. Coronavirus and the economic collapse it has caused has swallowed up the news’ attention, and Bernie Sanders dropping out has done little to stop that.

News flash: the world continues to spin. There are, contrary to popular belief, other events transpiring around the globe. Today I’ll give you a quick rundown on some of those events.

  1. China joins the UN Human Rights Panel
    • This one, frankly, is just ridiculous. China has been the world leader in human rights abuses since Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward. They have yet to relinquish that title, and it does not look like they’re going to anytime soon. As has been reported by other major news outlets, China is currently engaging in systemic reprogramming of the country’s Muslim minority. They’ve forced millions into concentration camps hidden from public view. Just one more way the UN has failed in its public duties.
  2. Radiation spikes in Chernobyl as wildfires rage
    • Unknown to me, wildfires in areas of high radiation can cause radiation spikes. Who knew? The international implications of this story may not be significant. However, it serves as a reminder that events from the past can still have an effect on the present.
  3. OPEC agrees to cut oil production
    • As I had reported on previously, when the coronavirus pandemic began, the world economy got a second punch in the gut when Saudi Arabia and Russia, each trying to cripple each other’s and America’s oil industry, announced they would begin ramping up oil production. This caused consumers in America to cheer briefly, as gas prices dropped to an average of just under $2.00 a gallon. The celebration was cut short, however, by the impending economic collapse. In the last 48 hours, OPEC has come to an agreement to cut oil production by 10 million barrels a day. Goodbye, affordable gas prices.

There are plenty of other stories out there that have gone unnoticed in the last three weeks, but I think the underlying message here is clear. If some story in your life completely takes over the news, remember to look deeper. There is always more to the news cycle than meets the eye.
