The US Constitution doesn’t exist in a vacuum. There are strong ideological and philosophical underpinnings behind its provisions and framework.
This post is a brief summary accompanied by a link to an article written by Justin Stapley for the Federalist Coalition, a 501(c)(4) non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to promote and educate Americans on the principles of federalism.
Constitutional values, the norms of a free society, the moors of the American republic; these are things oft-spoken of but rarely, it seems, understood. In recent years, there is little attempt to understand the political philosophies that inspired the creation of the US Constitution and other founding documents. Instead, the founders and their vision are either wrested towards the support of some modern tangent or belittled and dismissed as a passing consideration from a by-gone age.
But, I think it’s safe to say that regardless of technological development or the supposed advancement in morals and intellect, human nature remains the same now as it was in 1787. Perhaps that’s why the dysfunction the founders crafted a system of government to avoid has slowly manifested itself over the last hundred years as that system has begun to unravel.
