In my latest for the NOQ Report, I lay out the Jefferson View on foreign policy: that liberty threatened anywhere is liberty threatened everywhere.

Something I get a lot of is considerable surprise at the way I can come off as a die-hard libertarian one moment and then move seamlessly into sounding like a straight-up neoconservative the next. But I come off as libertarian only insomuch as I am a classical liberal, and classical liberalism was far from puritanically isolationist. In fact, I see myself as entirely consistent in how I follow the traditions of Jefferson and Madison.
That’s why I wrote this article, to put forward the Jefferson View of foreign policy. In it, I discuss my view that the argument between American leadership and global engagement on the one hand and disengagement and avoidance of global entanglements on the other is not a question of support for liberty or for openness to big government. Rather, it is a question of whether or not liberty is viewed as a global concern or only a national concern.
My argument, as laid out in this article, is that liberty is the birthright of all mankind. The American Revolution was much more than simply an assertion of American rights. It represented a revolution for human rights and human dignity. It’s a revolution that continues both within and without America’s shores.
This is why I will continue to find common cause with freedom fighters the world over. And it’s why I’ll advocate for American leadership in the international community and for the assertion and protection of the American values of freedom and liberty wherever they are threatened.
