The US Constitution hangs by far fewer threads than it did even a few years ago. But of those threads, I will say this: there may be few, but they have the capacity to be strong.
This post is a brief summary accompanied by a link to an article written by Justin Stapley for the Federalist Coalition, a 501(c)(4) non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to promote and educate Americans on the principles of federalism.
Those familiar with Latter-day Saint theology know about an early prophecy in the modern history of the church that warns the US Constitution will one day hang by a thread. As I mentioned in the article linked below, I dare not claim to know if that prophecy is coming to fulfillment in our time. But, no honest observer can deny that our society has increasingly inched towards a post-constitutional reality.
More and more, the competing political factions in America look at the checks and balances of our political system less as a needed bulwark against the abuse of power and more as impediments for their political goals. Every step they take weakens the framework of the US Constitution a little more.
But there are those who oppose these post-constitutional forces. We are few, we are often drowned out by the noise of dysfunction, and most of us are out of power, seemingly irrelevant, and highly unpopular in the eyes of both the hostile Left and Right. But we are far from out of the fight for the future of the American republic.
So long as we hold to the weight of history, the principles of the American founding, and seek the truths of human nature and civil society, our irrelevance will be but a moment as the false doctrines of political charlatans fall from the weight of their own lies and deceit.
We who have survived the refiner’s fire of this era of discord and have come out still holding to the values and principles we know to be true…are damn strong threads.
