There have recently been rumors circulating on the internet, especially in libertarian corners, that Justin Amash may be getting close to a decision on whether he will mount a presidential campaign. Specifically, The Liberty Herald, claims to have sources confirming this rumor.
Ever since Justin Amash struck out on his own as an independent, leaving behind the Republican Party, he has steadily gained credibility across party lines and among independents for his principled stances and his willingness to buck the competing narratives of the hyper-partisan Left and Right.
Specifically, support for Amash has become somewhat of a rallying point for various intersections of the “Never Trump” political Right. He has gained a considerable online following from libertarians and liberty-minded conservatives who have grown disenchanted with Trump’s trade policies and the apparent acquiescence of Rand Paul and others to Trump’s leadership.
His principled stands have also gotten a nod of approval from more traditional conservatives and popular conservative pundits, such as Charlie Sykes, Bill Kristol, Jonah Goldberg, and David French. And, uniquely, his support for Trump’s impeachment has increased his support and credibility among the center-left as well.
When Justin Amash chose to leave the Republican Party, many assumed it was a precursor to an independent or third-party bid for the presidency. But he has been continuously cryptic about whether or not he will throw his hat into the ring.
Only time will tell, but judging by the online support from a surprisingly wide array of political viewpoints, Justin Amash could occupy a uniquely powerful independent center-lane in a presidential contest.
