I’m pleased to announce I’ve been able to secure means to travel to Washington DC and attend the Summit on Principled Conservatism.
This article is from The Editor’s Corner, with insights, short-posts, and general ramblings from Editor/Owner Justin Stapley.
Stand Up Republic and Principles First are sponsoring a grassroots Summit on Principled Conservatism on February 29th in Washington DC. Literally squeaking in by the skin of my teeth (the summit was listed as sold out yesterday), I was able to procure transportation and purchase a ticket to the summit in the last few days.
For those who haven’t heard of this upcoming event, it’s billed as a “first-of-its-kind” event. It has the goal of bringing together conservative speakers, thought leaders, and grassroots activists with the focus of reviving principled conservatism in the United States. There are a host of confirmed speakers, including Bill Kristol, Charlie Sykes, Ramesh Ponnuru, and Heath Mayo.
While the goal is clear, reviving principled conservatism, the open question of the summit will be “what conservatism means today and where the conservative movement must go from here.”
If I have any hopes for what may come of this historic moment, it’s that we can find a way to truly place principles first. I hope the conversations center around creating a foundation for a principled future, and less on posturing, maneuvering, or on short-term electoral victories or defeats.
If the principles of conservatism are to endure, I believe we need to find a way to break free of the vicious cycle of expanding power we have seen result from the hyper-partisan interplay of the Republicans and the Democrats. And I only see one way to accomplish this:
We must embark on a great crusade to rebuild a principled conservative movement. Only from such a foundation can we assert the founding principles that alone can secure domestic tranquility for ourselves and our children. No matter how we choose to proceed, we must ensure our actions put principles first.
I hope that at this summit, we can look beyond fear and doubt, stand athwart the anxieties of our time, and chart a path to a new horizon.
