Burn-It-Down Populism is no less destructive coming from the Left as it is coming from the Right.

How far does this rabbit hole go?

For the last four years, the combined symphony of voices on the Left has constantly bemoaned Donald Trump’s destruction of the norms of our society. They have met every act, every utterance, and every Tweet with absolute outrage.

But now, many of these same voices are justifying the destruction of certain norms and even literal destruction of property because “People are angry.”

It makes me wonder whether the Left has ever truly understood what Trumpism is, because just about everything that has justified Republican and conservative support for Trump derives from their anger over their perception that they are losing their country.

We’re living in a moment when everyone’s angry. Everyone thinks everyone else is out to get them. Everyone is lashing out in fear and emotion. If anger is a justification for burning everything down, then I guess the only thing we’re arguing about is which side has the most grievances, which side has the right to be the most angry, which side has the real reasons to burn it all down.

We are apparently learning all the wrong lessons from Trumpism because “Burn-it-down” populism isn’t just bad on one or the other side of the aisle. This kind of behavior and these kinds of justifications are bad for society, period.
