Democrats often ignore human dignity is lost in the subsistence upon the fruit of other’s labors, while Republicans often ignore that hard work only yields fruit under certain conditions.
The solution is neither in providing the American Dream as a government subsidy nor in ignoring that inequitable circumstances can arise despite every earnest and honest effort.
Both the idea that equity can be achieved through government contrived pseudo-equality and its converse that survival of the fittest provides an equitable economic model are ideologies unmoored from the realities of the human condition.
Life is simply not fair, but the very history of government is an attempt by human society to contrive fairness in our laws and in our ethics as much as we are able.
The question, then, is what manner of economic policy can we contrive which affords our citizens the dignity of living upon the fruits of their own labors while ensuring equity and fairness in dealing with circumstances and tragedies outside their control but nevertheless exacting a heavy cost on their lives.
