Supporting and honoring the American flag while also working for liberty and justice for all, which the flag stands for, is neither impossible nor should it be particularly difficult.

It’s one of those walk and chew gum type of things.

The idea that we must disrespect and dishonor national symbols or besmirch our nation’s history to stand with those who’ve faced injustice is just insensible.

Those who make it a choice between loving our country and taking pride in America’s heritage or demonstrating that “Black Lives Matter” by assuming an attitude of shame towards the nation and its symbols are presenting a false choice and aren’t interested in real solutions.

Being invested in liberty and justice for all is the very definition of an American patriot. Dr. King knew that, which is why he appealed to the American sense of patriotism in his fight for civil rights.

Disparaging the nation and its history while excusing acts of violence closes hearts and minds. Reconciliation and civil rights are far too important goals to allow violence to squander a moment when so many hearts are open.

Shall we continue arguing fruitlessly in the desert of discontent, or shall we find a way to come together and find our way, hand-in-hand, to the promised land Dr. King saw from the mountaintop?
