Far too many good points are silenced by those who can only see the abuses of their political opponents.
This article is from The Editor’s Corner, with insights, short-posts, links, and general ramblings from Editor/Owner Justin Stapley.
In today’s political atmosphere, Republicans and Democrats like big buts.
Every good point made against Donald Trump’s actions or the GOP’s direction is ended by replies of “But Hillary” or “But the Libs.” Similarly, every argument against the Democrats’ vision and policy agenda is met by “But Trump.”
While both sides have put a lot of effort into bringing their opponent’s strawmen to life, they’re still strawmen. And, by making the conversations exclusively about these strawmen, we don’t talk about anything of substance anymore.
While there’s definitely a growing cross-section in each party that are true-believers, I can’t help but wonder whether Trump or Biden would stand a chance against a principled candidate if the big buts didn’t crowd out the room and suck the oxygen out of any substantial debate.
If Americans really want to see healthy norms restored in this nation, maybe it’s time for a diet?
