In mid-January, I ran an article here at The Liberty Hawk mentioning rumors that Justin Amash might be near a decision to mount a presidential campaign. But no word ended up coming from Amash or others, and I didn’t mention the rumors again.

But in recent weeks, a buzz began rising once more about a possible Amash run. Specifically, several news sites have confirmed that Justin Amash stopped actively campaigning for his House seat in February. An Amash campaign statement seems to confirm he has been preparing for a possible presidential campaign since that time:

“He has been discussing the potential campaign with his family, his friends, his team, and others, and a decision can be expected soon.”

While no announcement had been forthcoming in January, it appears the rumors were at least based on some truth. It was only the next month that Amash began actively considering and preparing for a presidential campaign as he set aside his campaign to get re-elected to the House of Representatives.

Until July last year, Justin Amash was a Liberty Caucus Republican in the House of Representatives. He had held his Michigan seat since he was elected in the Tea Party wave of 2010. He rose to prominence among libertarian and liberty-minded conservative circles as a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus

Amash already had a reputation as a maverick when Trumpism swept through the Republican Party, and he found himself at odds with the party’s new direction under Donald Trump and his supporters.

Amash resigned his position in the House Freedom Caucus in June 2019, and on July 4th, he announced he had left the Republican Party and declared his independence. Ever since that moment, many observers, including myself, have speculated he would eventually run for president, either as an independent or as the Libertarian Party’s nominee.
